Metagenomic Sequencing Technology

At our next-generation genomic sequencing laboratory, we use the latest technology to simultaneously and independently sequence the genome in each of the organisms present in your microbiome sample. We use the term metagenomic because our technology allows us to sample the billions and billions of data points and sequence and evaluate the bacterial diversity in your microbiome sample.

 

This next-generation technology is being utilized globally to learn more about the human microbiome and its role in our health, how it impacts which diseases we contract and how it affects our immune systems. MaMome’s proprietary algorithms match microbiome data with individual nutritional requirements. MaMome is currently studying how your microbiome can be used to predict the later development of certain disease conditions, specifically during pregnancy.

What Is My Microbiome?

To understand the scope of your microbiome, think back to science class and learning about genetics. You probably saw representations of human DNA with 23 pairs of chromosomes and
the helix architecture. We learn in science class that our DNA is unique to each of us and that is why, for example, we look different than our siblings even when we share the same parents.

In 2003, scientists mapped the human genome for the first time. The human genome is the genetic material from each of those chromosomes and mitochondria and is approximately 3 billion DNA base pairs. That project took over 10 years and was famous for the cost and scope of the research.

But the human genome only accounts for about 43% of the genetic material in our bodies at any given time. The surface of your body (internal and external) is coated in microbes. Our bodies host invisible ecosystems of microbes such as bacteria, fungi, protozoa and even viruses that interact with our bodies all our lives.

Collectively, the genetic material from all of these microbes or microbiota is termed the “microbiome”. Your microbiome is unique to you, and to get an idea of the size, it could weigh as much as five pounds. The organisms in your microbiome are approximately 100 times more diverse than the human genome.

There is increasing recognition of the role of diet and other environmental factors and how the microbiome is affected. Your microbiome is unique to you and begins to evolve while you are still in the womb. Identical twins’ microbiomes are only slightly more similar to each other when compared to non-identical twins.

MaMome is studying how what you eat affects your microbiome in an effort to better understand how personalized nutrition, based on your microbiome, can help give you and your baby better health outcomes.
